"Flight of the Navigator" Flies Again

For kids of the 80’s like me (especially ones that grew up on The Disney Channel), I know you will appreciate this - I just read that Disney is getting ready for a re-make of  Flight of the Navigator. In case you need a refresher - the film is about 12 year old boy that falls into a ravine, ends up on a sweet spacecraft controlled by an entertaining robot (voiced by none other than Pee-Wee Paul Reubens), and reappears 8 yrs later still the same age and no memory of what happens. NASA gets involved. Sarah Jessica Parker makes one of her first film appearances, and The Beach Boys’ song “I Get Around” is forever etched in my brain as the Flight of the Navigator song. Big fun for all! (Check it out on DVD…perfect for your next 80’s flashback movie night.)

No word yet on casting or when it will start production, but John Hyde, who was executive producer of the original, is on board again. As for the lead role, my money is on Disney casting one of their tween stars. As long as he knows the words to “I Get Around” he has my vote. And while I am making requests I think a cameo from Pee-Wee and Sarah Jessica Parker are needed for the re-make (this time with less blue eye shadow), and I think an IMAX release is called for. Cause if you are going to re-make an 80’s cult favorite in my opinion you better go all out.

And just to make sure you have this song in your head all day like I do now, watch this classic clip. — Lisanne
