Omni Daily News

Poetry Across the Pond:  Congratulations to Carol Ann Duffy, who has been named the first British female poet laureate in over three centuries.  British Prime Minister Gordon Brown praised Ms. Duffy, calling her “a truly brilliant modern poet who has stretched our imaginations by putting the whole range of human experiences into lines that capture the emotions perfectly.”

Can’t Beat These Prices: If you are a comics fan, make sure you don’t miss Free Comic Book Day tomorrow.

For seven years now, North American comic book publishers small and large have spread their love on the first Saturday in May, otherwise known as Free Comic Book Day.

There’s more to be had on Free Comic Book Day, although what is available will vary by the indie shop you visit. A full list of the 40 comics to be given away can be had at the event’s official site. You can also scan the signings lineups and see whose John Hancock is worth chasing down in your neck of the woods.”

Easy to guess what’s on the agenda for my colleague Alex Carr this weekend.

Wilde About BooksThe Wall Street Journal has a great review of Thomas Wright’s Built of Books and its exploration of Oscar Wilde’s most beloved titles.  Though best known for his quick wit and mocking prose, Wilde was a voracious reader who (literally) devoured Greek classics, Irish folk tales, and modern literature with vigor.

“[H]e had a habit, for instance, of tearing off the upper corners of pages and chewing on them as he read.”

If Omnivoracious ever needs a patron saint, I nominate Oscar Wilde.
