Painting Techniques For Upgrading Your Old Furniture

By Cleo Naftern

An old furniture can still be used and proudly displayed at home. It just needs some tender loving care and before you know it, the idea of getting a brand new piece may seem far-fetched.

A new paint job can make any item look good as new. You can either use the same color or be a bit experimental and go for a different hue. Perhaps the same family color but of a varying shade. It’s just like getting a brand new furniture minus the high expenses.

Start with a paint primer. It will ensure longevity of the paint thus, putting off any repainting anytime soon. After which, you can proceed to painting with the color of your choice.

Choose a color that you will like and will brighten up the room. One choice you may want to make is to paint it a pastel color that will be bright, especially if it has been a dark piece of wood. You can simply paint it white, or you can use a variety of different techniques to get it the way that you want.

First, painting with a worn-out effect. Apply the paint first then rub it off using a fine sand paper. Do this in spots where you want to create the washed-out look. An alternative is to use two shades with an undercoat and a top coat. Rub off some of the overcoat so the underlying paint will show through. Patina painting uses this technique where a blue green tone is matched with a gold undercoat, the former used as an undercoat.

Another painting technique is crackle painting, which is used for making a furniture look like an antique. Crackle paints are available in crafts store or home decor shops.

If you have area rugs but you want to change them without spending new ones as much as possible, just dye the area rugs with the color you want. If you have a plain area rug, you can also practice your creativity by painting a design or pattern on it. Using the same color scheme as the rest of the room will make the area rugs a definite shoo-in in the room’s interior.

To finish the painting job, make use of stencil designs for a more polished look. See, you don’t really have to discard your old furniture just yet. Maybe not forever if you keep on repainting every time you’re up for something new. - 23546
