A big thanks to everyone who took the time to weigh in on my previous post about ranking the first 10 Star Trek movies. It’s great to read the contrasting opinions, and I especially liked Dick Eagleson’s description of the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan battles as “naval combat” rather than “dogfights”–brilliant, and totally in line with Nicholas Meyer’s direction! Obviously I don’t mind Nemesis as much as some of you, and putting it at #5 sort of enforces the “even-numbered” rule about Trek movie quality, but again the more important grouping for me is not the even numbers but the top four and the bottom six, and depending on my mood I could shuffle around the selections in both of those groupings depending on my mood (except for #1).
But some people mentioned needing to rerank the movies once they’d seen the new movie that opened last weekend. So…. what did you think? I loved it. I thought the cast was perfectly suited to the roles, it had action, humor, and emotional impact, and I enjoyed all the little touches aimed at Trek fans, such as Karl Urban saying, “Damn it, man, I’m a doctor, not a physicist!” and seeing Kirk take on the Kobayashi Maru scenario referred to in Wrath of Khan. (I understand that this has been previously depicted in books, but I haven’t read those.) I still have to keep Wrath of Khan in the top spot, but I think I’d rank J.J. Abrams’ effort at #2. Maybe it won’t hold up when I rewatch it and the others, but that’s what I’m thinking right now. How would you rank the 11 movies? (For consistency’s sake, I’ve republished my original list below without wishy-washy reshuffling and just added the new movie.) –David
