Tile and Grout Myths

By Rick Amorey

As the recession continues to take on the average American, we continuously strive to compensate by looking for ways to have a simpler and lower maintenance way of living. An option is for homeowners to start looking into using tiles for their floors and kitchen counters. Tiles are rapidly becoming the preferred choice, especially for states that are in milder climates. But there are a lot of negative perceptions that are not true. Make sure you know about tiles before you disregard the idea. Here are some of the common myths debunked about the tile:

1. It’s expensive to use tiles. While there are a wide variety of prices for tiles; the price range is from a dollar to $25 per square foot. But see if you can imagine this; tiles are way more efficient than carpeting, as tiles can last a lifetime when taken care of.

2. Tile designs are not interesting enough. While you do get tile designs that are plain and drab, you can get a wide array of designs as tiles come in a variety of colors and shapes. If you have an artistic eye for this, so much the better. If you want, you can even tone down the design, to get the understated brilliance of a pearl. Hire a designer if you’re unsure.

3. Floors with tiles are high maintenance. Now, this is pure bunk; the opposite, in fact, is true. Floor made of wood can be warped by spilled liquid on it, or easily marked by scratches. Tile is tough and durable.

4. Tile very easily gets dirty. While time to time you will be required to call in for professional maintenance from grout cleaners, you won’t need to do it as often as you think. Tiles will stay clean longer, when you compare it to other types of flooring. For people who suffer from allergies, asthma or lung-related conditions, this is the best choice for them.

5. Tile is easily breakable. Yes, tile may crack and break, but only if it’s not installed properly. If it’s placed on the surface with care, it will resist breakage from impact from falling objects. Fact is; there are tiles from the Roman Empire that survive intact until now.

6. Grout and tiles are back-breaking to clean. This is a myth, as you can get in professional grout cleaners to handle it for you. Grout will accumulate mold if you choose to ignore the cleaning, and may pose a health hazard, but it doesn’t mean you can’t do the job yourself. - 23546
