We’re one day removed from Earth Day, and Disney’s Earth is now in theaters. I haven’t seen Earth, but the trailers look just like Planet Earth to me. It’s a good idea to do something like this on the big screen because many people, including me, were wowed by Planet Earth, especially if they watched it on high-definition Blu-ray. I admit that ever since then I’ve been watching other films that I hoped might have the same impact, Galapagos, Ganges, and The Universe had some good stuff in them, and Baraka–while a very different film–is still one of the best-looking Blu-ray discs I’ve ever seen (Baraka is 53% off for one more day in our Earth Day sale–sorry for the commercial break). I haven’t yet seen the Blu-ray versions of the IMAX movies Deep Sea or Coral Reef Adventure. The Blue Planet: Seas of Life is great, but it doesn’t sound like a Blu-ray version is coming any time soon. So still nothing else quite like Planet Earth….
But I’ve just seen a great new clip and am really excited about the potential. This show is called Nature’s Most Amazing Events, and it’s going to be on DVD and Blu-ray on June 16. A big plus is that like Planet Earth, it’s from the BBC and narrated by David Attenborough (as has been noted previously, the version of Planet Earth that aired on Discovery Channel was narrated by Sigourney Weaver). Of course I don’t expect anything to completely match the Planet Earth phenomenon, but take a look and see what you think. And if Nature’s Most Amazing Events does turn out to be a success, remember that you heard it here first. –David
