Canonical’s free Ubuntu operating system is quickly becoming synonymous with Linux these days–more and more people are trying out Linux for the first time by using Ubuntu, and even die-hard Linux users are switching over for the sake of its stability and compatibility. There are lots of great Linux distributions, but Ubuntu’s consistent quality and predictable release and support cycle are quickly making it a household name at a time when Microsoft’s products are increasingly unreliable and Apple’s products are increasingly expensive.
The latest version of Ubuntu, dubbed “Jaunty Jackelope”, brings a lot of improvements to the table over the previous stable version, including:
-
- faster boot times (around 25 seconds)
- better native disc burning with brasero
- plug-and-play Wacom tablet support
- a new notification system
- OpenOffice 3
- improved intelligent switching between WiFi and 3G

If you’ve never used Linux before, Ubuntu is possibly the easiest and most trouble-free way to try it out and see if it works for you. If you’re a Linux power-user, this latest version comes with lots of backend improvements that are worth upgrading for, including the latest version of GNOME and vast improvements in the handling of ATI video cards.
