Universal Puts "BioShock" Movie on Hold Due to Budget Concerns

BioShock movie put on hold Did the idea of a BioShock movie seem a little premature? Considering that we may not even see the second game until next year and the budget for the movie, which has been in pre-production for a while, has skyrocketed to $160 million, I'd have to say yes. And apparently Universal agrees. Variety reported yesterday that the studio is putting the movie on hold due to the budget becoming "untenable," and are in the process of parring down the pre-production staff. The good news for fans though is that Universal stills seems committed to making the movie. According to director Gore Verbinski the studio is "…asking that the film be moved outside the U.S. to take advantage of a tax credits." Also, according to the Variety piece, "All parties vow that "BioShock" will not become another "Halo."" Only time will tell with regard to that though.

All I have to say is that with this delay, all those parties had better hope BioShock 2 doesn't flop, or the movie may end up in permanent mothballs, tossed to another studio and director who will do it more cheaply and with less attention to detail. Basically I'm talking the Uwe Boll/Sci Fi Channel treatment. That would be painful indeed.
